Activities to Reinforce Decimals at Home

Students are investigating decimals as a way to show numbers less than 1 (.075 lbs of deli cheese) and numbers between whole numbers (the marathon is 26.2 miles long.)
You can build on your child's work in this unit by looking for everydayt examples of decimals and talking about what they mean.  Discuss problem situations that involve decimals as they arise.

Look in the newspaper or online at the weather statistics for our area.  What is the average amount of precipitations for the month?  How much rain or snow has there been so far this month?  How claose are we to the average?

ex.  January average:  4.80 inches of rain
So far this month:  3.94 inches of rain

Track your favorite sports team's record.

2005 Boston Red Sox:  95 wins, 67 losses
95 wins/162 games = 0.586

Another idea, that is beneficial to both students and their parents is to talk about their math homework with them.  When you see your child using a strategy that is not familiar to you, ask for an explanation.  The conversation will be educational for both you and your child.

Thanks for always supporting your student!!
Smiles!

Snowflakes

Fifth Grade has been asked to make paper snowflakes to decorate the office.  They can be any type of snowflake you would like to make.  Mrs. Hamilton dropped by our class and demonstrated how to make these super cool 3-D snow flakes.
If you'd like the directions you can follow THIS LINK.

Another great snowflake can be made from coffee filters.  Just fold in half 3 times and cut out a design.

Thanks in advance to the Fifth Grade for their help with this fun project!!

Practicing Fractions with Hershey Bars

Thought you might enjoy this fun way to reinforce what we've been learning in math.  It is a great activity that can be done independently or with others over the break.  Have fun!!!

Before you open the candy bar estimate how many pieces it is divided into.
Estimate: ____________________Actual _______________________How many rows? _____________How many columns? _________What addition or multiplication problem do you see using the above information? Write the problem and a picture below.

Break off the first column of the candy bar. How many pieces did you take? ______________________
What fraction of the candy bar did you take? ____________If we use each column to stand for one so that the candy bar has 4 sections, and we take one section, what fraction do you take? _____________Break off another column. How many pieces have you taken all together? ____________What fractions of the candy bar is gone? ________________Can you think of a different way to say that? ________________ * Hint: Look at the two piles.Break off another column. How many pieces have you taken all together? ______________What fractions of the candy bar is gone? ______________________Put all the pieces together in a pile. Discuss how you will share the candy so that each person has the same amount. Write your explanation down using pictures if necessary.

5th Grade Angels

November 2013

Dear Parents,
It is the time of year when the spirit of the holidays fills us with joy! We want
to spread that feeling to families in Frisco who need help insuring the holidays are
memorable and filled with wonder for their children.
Your child’s class is participating in a service project to sponsor an “Angel”
during this holiday season. “Angels” are less fortunate children in this community.
These families and children will have a joyful and memorable holiday season with
your help and generosity. Attached is information about the Angel(s) that has
been adopted by your child’s class, including clothing sizes, needs, and wishes.
If you would like to participate, please choose an item of need or a wish that
the “angel” has listed or contact your child’s teacher to help coordinate gifts
for your class angel.
Please send your donations to school with your child:
1. Un-Wrapped (we understand the kids like to wrap the gifts, but we are limited on space and usually
un-wrapped gifts take less room. The angel family will take great joy in wrapping the gifts donated.)
2. IN A BAG LABELED WITH THE ANGEL NUMBER
3. If you are buying for more than one angel, please send in separate bags, with angel
number on each bag/gift
4. If you would like to donate wrapping paper, please send a roll with your gifts

Your child will take the gift to his/her classroom. Please send all gifts by__Monday,
December 2nd ___________________. All items donated will be distributed to families
on December 18, 2013 and December 19, 2013.

If you, your family, your work, or an organization would like information on adopting
angels or volunteering, please go the Small World website, www.swcharity.org or
contact Randi Baker at davisran@friscoisd.org or 469-633-6861.

The holidays are often a time to remember our blessings and to help others in need. Thank you for
helping others to enjoy the holidays with a sense of spirit and cheer!

Multiplication Facts

We've noticed that many of our learners have come to 5th Grade without complete mastery of their basic multiplication facts. (Multiplication is introduced in the 2nd grade with mastery expected in 3rd.  They are expected to not only know their multiplication facts by the time they reach 5th grade but also be able to multiply two digit numbers by two digit numbers.)  Because of this, they are struggling with the new concepts that are introduced in 5th grade

.  A few weeks ago, every learner was sent home with a sheet to get them started online with Xtra Math.  Sadly, some that need it the most still have not begun.  This is now required daily homework.  It takes no more than 5 minutes.  If your learner is unable to login, please let me know as we want every student to be successful.  Weekly timed multiplication tests will be given until we all show mastery.  Once your student has mastered their multiplication facts, they will join the Math Club and not be required to do XtraMath nor the multiplication timed tests.
My goal, with your help,  is to have every student up to speed within the next 3 weeks.

Because parents are our partners in educating their children, I wanted to share a few resources.  Hopefully you will find them helpful in getting your child up to speed.
